Update

Things are going well on the minimalism front.  I have been going through the house clearing up clutter here and there.  I have not made a plan yet to confront the upstairs closet. That will be the most work, but I will be so happy when it's finally done!  So far we have bagged up tons of clothes for the Goodwill.  Scott helped me reach some high shelves in the kitchen last night & I was able to put together 2 boxes of kitchen utensils, cook wear and miscellaneous knick knacks that have not seen the light of day since we moved into our house 9 years ago.  I also found & discarded over 30 broken pencils & pens that didn't work.  Really, why can't we throw things away??  It feels so good to finally start letting things go.  I wanted to share a post  I recently found on  becomingminimalist.com entitled "Not More, Better"  that really inspired me.  Enjoy!

24 hours. Every day we get them. And every day we use them. Sometimes we use them wisely: creating, exercising, resting, cooking, eating. Other times, the hours are wasted: mindless Internet surfing, watching too much television, worrying, or oversleeping. But every single day, the hours are always used. This is the very nature of time. There is not “more” use of time, only “better.”
This is also the very nature of money. Our finances are always used somewhere. They may be directed towards the house payment, the grocery bill, the student loan, the savings account, or others, but our money is always spent somewhere. There is not “more” use of money, only “better.”
I have found the principle of “not more, but better” holds true for many of our most important resources: money, time, energy, focus, mental capacity, relationships. Understanding this truth and embracing it becomes an important principle in living a thoughtful and intentional life. Life is, after all, the sum of our choices. And often times, the choice is not more, but better.
Recognizing that positive change is not a matter of choosing more, but choosing better is a powerful motivator. There is freedom to be found in it. It can be a freeing and inspiring shift in our thinking. Consider these practical examples:

Time

I used to think I didn’t have enough time to exercise. But when I made an intentional commitment to begin exercising regularly, the use of my time began to change. There were not extra hours in the day, only a change in how I used them. As a result, I began to spend less time watching television. Exercise was not a use of more time, it was a better use of my existing time.

Money

Similarly with money, I used to think there was never enough. But as we began our journey towards minimalism, we soon discovered we had more money available than ever before. Not because we were making more, but because we were spending less at the shopping mall. Suddenly, we were able to redirect more finances towards saving, giving, and creating memorable experiences for our family. We did not spend more of our money, we spent it better.

Food

As positive changes began taking place in my home and life, I felt drawn to eat better. As a result, I began learning how to cook and enjoy healthier foods and meals. Junk food was being replaced with fruits and vegetables and chicken and fish. I didn’t add food to my diet, I changed the food in my diet. Not more, better.

Focus

Often times, one of the greatest changes we can embrace in our lives is learning where to place our focus. When I began to intentionally choose to meditate on the positives in my life rather than the negatives, I opened my heart to gratitude, contentment, and joy. This was not a result of more focus, but better focus.

Relationships

Whether we choose to spend our time with ourselves, positive influences, or negative influences, our relationships are always directed somewhere. These voices we allow into our lives impact us greatly. When I work to choose positive relationships that inspire me to contribute value to this world, it naturally changes who I spend my time with. Again, not more relationships, better relationships.
There are, of course, some elements of life that are not finite. Our capacity for love, hope, and joy will always grow as we discover more and more places to find them. But often times, this growth is not a result of choosing “more” for our lives, but choosing “better.”

Happy Birthday Gabby!

Happy Birthday to Gabby who turned 14 today!  We celebrated her birthday on Sunday by going bowling.   It was a lot of fun, even though none of us were very good at it.  Afterwards we met up with Jerry & Brenda for a yummy dinner at Olive Garden.  Tonight we brought pizza to the studio for Gabby to share with her dance friends.  After she got home from rehearsal she opened her presents from us.  A bit of a low key birthday, but I think she was happy.  We love you, Gabby!

Got their bowling balls picked out!  The funny thing is Corey, Gabby & I ended up sharing the same 2 bowling balls and no one used that purple one.  That guy in the back totally photo-bombed us!

Corey wanted proof that she got to triple digits.  And she totally trounced the rest of us!

Winston was very interested in the yummy smelling caramels.

He did not like that teddy bear that she got from her friends, though.

Hoop earrings.

Her very own purse so she stops borrowing mine!
Inside were 3 gift cards to some of her favorite spots.  She also got quite a bit of $$ from our extended family.

Just Dance Wii Game.  Corey was obviously excited about getting to use it :)

All her dance friends got her dark chocolate.  They know her so well!

Corey was interested to see if there was anything she might want :)

The Medicine Cabinet

Actually, it's more like a medicine shelf.  This shelf is located in my kitchen because the downstairs half bathroom has very limited storage & we didn't want to have to run upstairs every time one of us needed an Advil or a Bandaid.  The bad thing about having a medicine shelf in the kitchen is I have to give up precious shelf space in my cabinet challenged kitchen. That's not the worst part.  The shelf is high up because when the kids were little we didn't want them to get into the medicine.  Being short, I can barely see into the shelf, so I never know what we have & what we don't have.  I'm not sure how many times I've run out to buy medicines that we already had but I couldn't see unless I dragged a chair over to stand on.

Tonight I decided it was time to de-clutter this space.  I have not given up yet on my goal to de-clutter my house, although I almost did when I went into the upstairs closet to get some wrapping paper.  I don't even want to THINK about going into that room, but I digress. I pulled a dining room chair over and stood on it while I took out everything from this shelf.  First I sorted based only on expiration date.  I couldn't believe how many of our medicines had expired in 2010!  Yikes.  Next to get tossed was anything we bought but never worked.  Then all the Bandaids got tossed into one box.  Finally, anything that wasn't medical (like a bottle of blowing bubbles-really? what was it doing there?) got tossed.

Ah, the joy of an uncluttered shelf.  Now, onto the next!

Minimalism

Have you ever looked around your house and just wanted to throw everything away because there is just too much??  I have!  This past Christmas it was really hard for me to shop for Scott & the kids because they have everything!  Seriously, does anyone need any more STUFF??

Recently I stumbled upon a great blog about minimalism. The minimalism movement has been around for a while, but I hadn't quite been ready to embrace it until now.  I guess I just needed some inspiration.  Anyway, 2013 is going to be the year I finally commit to the "less is more" bandwagon.  It starts with de-cluttering, which will be challenging because, for some reason, it is really hard to part with things.

So today I've started clearing out my den.  I found on top of my desk hutch 2 old cell phones, 6 empty cell phone boxes, 4 cell phone car adapters to phones we no longer have, 3 empty camera boxes and two extra keyboards (seriously, we have ONE computer).  Behind the desk I found an old Dance, Dance Revolution mat that I guess has been broken for some time, but for some unknown reason has never made it into the garbage can.  I pulled out & shredded two giant bags worth of old bills, pay stubs,  banks statements & miscellaneous papers that I've filed & kept for no apparent reason.  I found all sorts of things in my filing cabinet including a Mother's Day purse that Gabby made me for a class project I don't know how many years ago.  That was really hard to part with and ended up going straight back into my keep pile.  Sigh.  I think it will take a while, but I am DETERMINED to get rid of anything that I don't use regularly.

I'll keep you updated on my progress.  To check out that awesome blog, click HERE

Puyallup Volksmarch #1

This morning we completed our first volksmarch of 2013 in Puyallup.  We've volksmarched in Puyallup several times, but since this was a new route, we decided to give it a go.  Unfortunately, it was not scenic at all, but it was still a good excuse for us to get out and get some exercise.  Luckily it didn't rain on us, but the wind was really cold at the beginning. Afterwards we went to TK's, which is an Irish pub in downtown Puyallup.  We didn't realize they only served breakfast until noon, but they were nice enough to make us food from their lunch menu a bit early.  The food was really good & the atmosphere was fun.  A great start to our volksmarching year.

Scott took 3 photos of the 3 of us, and in all of them one of us is looking the wrong way, has her eyes closed or has a goofy face.  This was the best of the lot!

Jen & Clarissa at the pub.

They had tons of soccer jerseys on the ceiling.  They take their soccer (or football)  seriously.

Scott finally got to try bangers & mash.  He said it was delicious.  I was going to post a picture, but the presentation was a bit too inappropriate.

Birthday Celebration

Happy Birthday to Scott who turns 46 tomorrow!  We decided to celebrate yesterday since his birthday falls on a week day this year.  Our first stop was BJ's restaurant in Tacoma for a yummy lunch. Afterwards we went to the LeMay Car Museum.  Scott & I had gone there back in October, but the girls had been unable to go.   We explored the British collection which we missed the first time.  That place is huge with 4 floors full of cars, motorcycles and other assorted vehicles.  There was still a lot to see that we didn't get to last time.  Gabby took a ton of pictures, but I tried to cull out only those that weren't featured in the last post.

We hardly ever order dessert, but this was a special occasion, so we ordered the beignet.  It was soooooooo good!

Not much left after we got a hold of it!

Corey liked the Flinstones car.

One of Scott's favorites.

Solar powered car.  We viewed the alternative power area which we also missed the first time.

This funny looking car is powered by electricity.

Beautiful view of downtown Tacoma.

Corey really liked this car.

Scott picked this book for one of his birthday presents.
